American? What is an American? Is it being free? Having opportunities? Throughout history, America is known as the land of opportunity and freedom, but throughout the years, immigrants had moved to America searching for a new successful life. The laws of America promised that everyone had and "equality of opportunity for youth and for others.” But then, a lot of times there are no opportunities or no jobs. An American with papers has more opportunities on achieving their desires than an American without. Being an American is define living in a place where one expects opportunities and freedom, but despite those expectations, one has to sacrifice and work hard to be define as American. To begin with, Americans are defined as being "free". When a person is born on the America soil, they are born with the freedom of speech. This is demonstrated in The Bill of Rights: A Transcription, where it states a " congress shall make no law …show more content…
In America and I, Yezierska describes how she never had the chance to find out who she is inside because she always had to work to make a living. Based on this information, one can't find the purpose on what to do with their life because they are always busy working for themselves. Besides working for a living, Americans can be define as working hard to make a new improved America, which actually reaches the expectations. In Address on the Occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, Roosevelt argues how an American can change America "by their effort and devotion they made the New World's freedom safer, richer, more far-reaching more capable or growth.” In other words, Roosevelt believes that the more time and effort an American puts in their home country, the more efficient and superior America is going to get by generation. As a result, to be define as an American, one has to work hard for themselves and work hard to make a better America
