As once said by Yang Jin-sung, a famous South Korean actress, “Courage is a gift from fear.” According to the dictionary definition, courage is the “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” I agree with both the dictionary definition and Jin-sung’s view on the topic. My personal belief about courage is that, in order for a person to become courageous, they must first experience fear. The first major point to remember when dealing with courage is that fear is required in order to experience it, thus meaning that you must not be fearless. As once said by Michael Hyatt, an inspirational speaker, “Courage is the willingness to act in spite of fear.” One of the best possible examples of this, in history, was the taking down of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001. Not everyone knows the story of the passengers’ courage and strength on that day, though it is definitely one that will go down in history with a lot of admiration. After the Twin Towers were taken down, there was also a plane that crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and one that was headed for the White House. Once the passengers of Flight 93 realized where they were headed, they immediately took action. Many of them took what they knew to be their last possible chance to call their family, said their goodbyes, and prepared themselves to save an unknown number of lives. They stormed the cockpit of the hijacked plane, took out the man who had taken it, and abruptly crashed it into a nearby field.
