Getting “Grittier”
What is grit? “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals.” This quote from Angela Lee Duckworth from her TED talk is motivational for showing the youth of today and the parents of these children that by working hard, your ability to achieve increases. Grit is “living life like a marathon, not a sprint.” Grit is not about talent, it is about work ethic. Grit is using failure as a motivation to improve. If that is what grit is, being able to learn from this TED talk and applying grit to my life as a freshmen in college is going to make me not only more successful in my college experience, but in my life. Human nature and the carnal self within us lives for instantaneous satisfaction and enjoyment without thinking about long term goals or consequences for our actions. Without setting goals, it is much harder to make something of ourselves and to reach our full potential as an individual. On the other hand, our goals are nothing without putting forth the effort to make it happen. I concur with her. Natural ability can only get someone so far in this life if they are not willing to work. Good work ethic, studying, and practicing is what sets someone apart from the pack. From Duckworth’s studies, she concluded that grittier kids were more likely to graduate. I assure you that good work ethic is a major factor in this conclusion she made. Not every single person has a natural ability to learn, succeed in athletics, sing, or play an instrument. I believe that these qualities can be developed by hard work even without ‘natural talent’.
