What does it mean to be happy?

What does it mean to be happy? This has been a reoccurring question in our class. To be honest with you I don’t really know if I know what it really means to be happy. Nothing against you Mr. Romero but it’s very difficult to teach what it really means to be truly happy. Going into this class I had my own opinion on what it really meant to be happy, and I still have the same view on happiness. Happiness is helping others in my opinion. Nothing is better than doing good deeds for people. I tend to worry about others before I think about my own needs. I think I answered that question pretty well in my essay. To be honest with you I still don’t really know if I know what it really means to be happy. But then again I don’t think anyone really does, there is so many things that make people happy. Nothing against you Mr. Romero but it’s very difficult to teach what it really means to be truly happy. Going into this class I had my own opinion on what it really meant to be happy, and I still have the same view on happiness because of my experiences, especially the memories I have with the less fortunate. Happiness is helping others in my opinion. Nothing is better than doing good deeds for people. I tend to worry about others before I think about my own needs. The most meaningful reading to the class that we read this year is definitely, Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics. In Book 1 it tells what the “end” or “goal” of the human being is. And it says the end goal is happiness. It is what we want. It is the goal. Another one of my favorite readings was Happiness: A Short Introduction by Dan Haybron. He said “A major part of the good life is connecting with what really matter.” Haybron said the elements of a good life are; happiness, morality, and virtues. And my parents raised me with those “elements”. Lastly, the Dorothy Day (my favorite reading) reading stuck out to me because I am also a religious person and loved the religious aspects of it.
