This can lead to increased food costs and reduced accessibility, especially for those with low incomes. One related area is the increased risk of foodborne diseases, which have been linked to warmer weather and intense rainfall (Ligeti et al., 2006). Studies have found a link between higher temperatures and the occurrences of food contamination and outbreaks of foodborne diseases, suggesting a future rise in the incidence of food contamination and poisoning (Zeuli et al., 2018). This can occur through the disruption in food preparation and storage practices, which depend on cool temperatures. To address potential adaptations regarding food security, the city of Toronto has looked to create resilient food systems that can provide sufficient and sustainable food and withstand the effects of crises. This has led to the Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture and Forestry (UPAF) being included in its climate change action plan, in which the growing of agricultural products and livestock are produced within or on the fringe (Dubbeling et al., 2019).
