Using word walls, setting the example and using classroom discourse is a way I would encourage students to engage in the classroom. Not allowing students to be degrading in any way with speech or actions, and having classroom rules and expectations posted for students to follow will allow students to know what is expected of them. The teacher in this video taught her class that she could be trusted and if they ever needed to talk to someone, she would talk with them or direct them to someone who could help them with their problem. Asking children to raise their hand when they have something to say, that way everyone can listen, will be a classroom procedure the children will know. It will show courtesy to the speaker and everyone can listen better understand what is being said. Classroom standards, academic language, and classroom discourse would be in my classroom according to my teaching philosophy of all students having an equal learning opportunity. Characteristics in the videos watched that I would like to emulate would be keeping classroom discourse on an academic level. Using appropriate language will help the students and teachers show and have respect for each other. Having clear goals set for each class academically will help lesson planning stay directed to the student’s success. In a video, students gave a speech and then the class did a reflection on how that student did on their speech is something I would like to incorporate into my classroom to help students gain self-confidence and provide classroom discourse. Learning goals are important for students because through a healthy discussion and discourse, students aid in making a positive learning environment that is encouraging to both the academic and personal growth of every class
