Using the principles and guidelines presented by Nielsen, our group performed a heuristic evaluation of Best Electronics’ website (http://www.best-electronics-ca.com). We inspected the website’s interface, evaluated the interface’s usability characteristics against a list of recognized usability principles, and documented the usability issues.
Visibility of system status:
This principle simply means that the website should offer the user some kind of visible feedback that the website is actually responding to the user. The website should also follow the conventions that people expect from a website. Best Electronics’ website needs some improvements in this area. Index page and Site listing links lead to the same page, which is confusing. Back to Best Home page link in each page is working, it leads to the home page which is a good thing. Text contained in the website is inconsistent, some areas have a small font, and others are normal. Links to different areas within the website do not follow any of the established web standards, links are underlined, but some words are also underlined, the only indications that a link exists is the user’s cursor. Not all links are connected, some link to a new window, some do not. The name of the link does not always match the name of the destination. For example, Index page and Site listing links leads to the same page which is products listing. Each page has its own style. Best Electronics’ website does not follow this principle at, this website contains a massive amount of information that is mostly written in a wall of text, it is lacking an interactivity between users and the website; a wall of text is hard to read, boring and intimidating. There are no visible subheads or bulleted lists to organize the content, so visitors are unable to navigate the website efficiently, it is difficult to go back to a page that a user previously viewed because of similar looks in most pages. There are no visual layouts to organize the content with respect to the principles of contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. This is ranked as moderate on the severity ranking scale because if a user cannot easily scan and read a web page they are more likely to abandon the
