The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) works to improve policies for, among other concerns, natural disasters, through services and agencies such as the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to improve public awareness/safety and provide funding/supplies, should a Federal State of Emergency be declared. (https://www.dhs.gov/) The DHS is responsible for coordinating, developing, and implementing plans for the national preparedness goals and the national preparedness system. They also provide a deadline for development and implementation plans to take place. The agency works to coordinate efforts to rebuild the infrastructure of the affected area and provide adequate housing for long term use for surviving victims of a natural disaster. FEMA will also provide resources for restoring health, promote economic development and restore the communities natural resources (www.fema.gov) The NWS is instrumental in communicating national disasters to the public. They typically communicate through media outlets, television broadcasts and emergency alert systems. The NWS, for example, utilizes Radar Systems Forecast Maps, and Satellite systems for tracking weather, such as hurricanes. They also provide color coding on their maps to distinguish the various types of weather expected in areas across the U.S. The forecast maps allow communities to prepare for the expected inclement weather. (www.weather.gov) The tools utilized by the NWS work in tandem with the DHS’ preparedness plans to keep the Homeland Security informed of natural disasters.
