Stress: Mental and Physical Effects Stress has become a major issue in our society today, and this can be attributed to many factors. Stress on the job, stress in our love life, stress in our family life, social stress, racial stress, and being over critical of ourselves are just a few of the contributing factors. Just as there are many things which promote stress in our lives, there are just as many ill effects on our health caused by excessive amounts of stress. Depression, coupled with anxiety, are some of these ill health effects, and this paper will discuss them individually, as well as, how they are related to each other. Depression, as a term, has been defined as the “lack of tonicity, loss of energy, feelings of weakness, of powerlessness, unhappiness, self-punishment, and the whole range of negative feelings” (Barroso, 2003, p. 89). The relationship between depression and self-critical perfectionism lies in these negative feelings, and the negativity in depression is related to “cognitive dysfunction” (Cognitive Symptoms in Depression Going 'Unnoticed and Untreated', 2015). Cognitive dysfunction symptoms include problems thinking and problems with concentration. There are many factors which may cause depression, and these include “genetic, hormonal, biological, as well as the impact of family and other socio-cultural factors” (Bembnowska & Josko-Ochojska, 2015, p. 116). Depression symptoms caused by social standing is something everyone can relate to. Social standing may include the home you live in, the car you drive, how much education you may or may not have, and the amount of money you make, among many other things. Symptoms of depression have been found to begin in children when they begin to experience puberty, and this may carry over into adulthood if left unrecognized and untreated (Bembnowska & Josko-Ochojska,
