Ashley Pasco Professor Staley-Abney PSY 212-80 11 March 2018 Depression Disorder Treatment Plan: Bipolar Disorder is a psychological disorder that undergoes extreme mood swings and changes an individual’s energy and activity levels. The DSM 5 distinguishes between two types of bipolar disorders which are bipolar I disorder and bipolar II disorder. Bipolar I disorder applies to an individual who has had at least one manic episode in their life time, which involves extreme mood swings between manic and major depression disorders. Bipolar II disorder applies to an individual who has had both hypomanic episode and a history of at least one major depressive episode, but never had a full-blown manic episode. It is based on how someone’s thoughts affect their emotions. Therapists use combinations of behavioral and cognitive techniques to help clients change negative thought patterns and develop more adaptive behaviors. They may help clients connect through thought patterns to negative moods by having them monitor the negative thoughts thought out the day by writing them down in a journal. They tend to challenge the negative thoughts and replace them with good ones. With this short-term therapy, the goal is to change the way someone feels. A short-term goal for a client in this therapy may be to make a no self-harm commitment with the therapist. The reason for this is because negative thoughts can cause someone to act accordingly to the situation, which may end on a bad note. With this goal, the individual may think before acting, which it can help them make better choices. This therapy therapist help the individual understand their own wrong thinking and doing, which can sometimes change the way they think. A long-term goal may consist of being sociable and learning how to take needed medications to help lower symptoms of depression. Antidepressants work by balancing chemicals in the brain that affect mood and emotions. Medications are used to treat or help symptoms of depression, which help improve mood, increase concentration, etc. Many times a certain medication will not work for an individual, therefore they have to switch to a different medication until they find the right one for the patient. Therapy is also needed with taking antidepressants because it is actually providing more protection against relapse. Studies show that in taking medication and going to therapy can show a better outcome than just taking medications. When taking antidepressants, an individual may take it from a couple months to years until they no longer feel depressed. Sometimes individuals stay on this long-term because it helps them feel improved and without it they will become depressed again. Electroconvulsive therapy is another treatment option if medications do not seem to work. This is a shock therapy that is effective and safe that can relieve major depression. Goals that clients achieve while going through biomedical treatment would be to take medications every day to help better themselves. This is a very important goal because most individuals who do not take their medication like they are supposed to tend to go in a depression cycle every so often. The goal is that they want to
