Sociology is the study of society. A society can be defined as a group of people who share a culture or way of life. Sociology investigates how people interact with each other, how social factors shape human behaviour and the way that society influences daily lives (University of Bath, 2017). Sociologists view behaviour as socially or culturally learnt rather that biological. For example, sociologists believe that the most significant institution where behaviours are learnt and people are socialised is within the family and not determined by biology (Moore, Aiken & Chapman, 2008). There are three types of Feminism. These are Marxist feminism, Radical feminism and Liberal Feminism. Feminists argue that the UK is a patriarchal society which means it is male dominated. They suggest that men have more power in a range of institutions than women. Marxist feminists believe that men benefit from the capitalist society which then affects the life chances of women. They suggest that men are socialised into exploitative roles. Radical Feminists suggest that the male dominated oppression and exploitation of women is built into all aspects of the way that society is organized. For example, the family is viewed to be the main institution in which patriarchy is rooted. Liberal Feminists focus on simply men and women being treated as equals and having the same rights.
