[A common developmental misconception students are apt to making is overgeneralization. Overgeneralization based on what a nonfiction image or nonfiction text depicts. For instance, If a student sees a picture of White traders buying slaves from the slave market, they may come to an overgeneralized conclusion saying – all White men were in support of slave trade because they needed Africans to work in their plantations in order to make profit from the goods they were cultivating. Although the images or texts I will use to model demonstration of my teaching point will have a balanced world-views, there is little or nothing I can do to ensure that students consult nonfiction resources that have balanced world view. Nevertheless, I can teach students to be critical thinkers by querying assumptions or notions that may lead them into making to statements or drawing conclusions about something that is more general than is justified by the available evidence. Thus, in lesson 1, students will synthesize the non-fiction images to relevant parts of their novel to deepen their understanding of the time period/character’s perspective. They are expected to carry out this learning task by working collaboratively with their fellow book club members, thus group discussions that take place within this period and individual responses will offer opportunities for students to develop and practice literary strategy taught. Similarly, in lesson 2, where students will synthesize a specific portion of a non-fiction text to relevant parts of their novel to deepen their understanding of the time period/character’s perspective, students will have opportunities to practice and develop the literacy strategy in group and individual learning
