For my read aloud, I choose the book Arnie and the New Kid by Nancy Carlson. Being in a Life skills classroom, I wanted to pick a book that address students with special needs and bullying. The book address how Phillip is different from others students. It also talks about how Arnie does not treat him very well but when he is treated the same changes his attitude toward Phillip.
My students learned what the definition of different was and how thing can be the same thing but one thing can make the two difference. Such as the bears we used, for the example, the bears were different color but my student recognized they were different sizes too. Another thing my students learned from this book was a better understanding on how we should treat people who are different. The see this all the time when they are not in the classroom. It allowed us to discuss how we should treat new students and how they would want to be treated by others.

We had conversations on what they thought the book was about and what were their predications for what was going to happen in the book. Some of our students wanted to see what happen and was excited about the book before we started to read. Having these conversations and engagement before we read, helps the students to make predictions on what they think will happen. It also helps there thinking time to come up with different prediction for the story. Using the visuals to help the student learn the new vocabulary helped. This visual allowed the students to see and touch what we were talking about. Bringing in vocabulary cards and different visual will help the students get a better understanding of what vocabulary we are
