Through the First Year Writing Seminar, my thinking process has been changed by increasing my awareness of race and cultural differences, improving my critical thinking skills, and developing my research abilities. From participating in the March happened on campus and in the classroom discussion of race held after the race incident, I realized how lucky I am as a student studying at Boston College and as a child born in a complete family. I also realized that as a minority, I need to take on more responsibilities regarding the issue of race. Especially as a Chinese student, I not only need to learn about race myself, but I also need to help more people, Chinese and Americans, learn about race and its issue we are facing today. The reading firmed my belief that the world should take advantage of the advance communication technologies and become a big family that embraces and cherishes different cultures. Through participating in the daily class discussion on all the readings, I learned to think and talk about an issue or a topic from different standpoints. I also learned to respect and understand different opinions because everyone thinks uniquely from variety of perspectives as I believe it is one of the results from living in a diverse society. I used to do research by simply typing in the topic on google and read through the first two or three websites that pop up. However, by doing the research inquiry, I learned how to do academic research by using different academic data bases.
