Have you ever thought that a new way of learning could be even more beneficial to education than the traditional way of learning? The U.S high school english curriculum typically has its students interpret texts with a formative approach. This means that when analyzing a text, the reader focuses on what the text reveals on the surface and synthesizes it without fully considering the deeper meanings with multiple perspectives. Critical lens theory is a new and innovative way to understand a text that high school English classes can use to push and improve their students' thinking. Jenna Copper is an education professor and high school English teacher who writes about instructional strategies to use in English curriculums. Copper claims that when critical lenses are used in classes they can “empower students to see life from new perspectives.” (Copper, 2019)The different ways to view a text give students a more diverse and deeper understanding of the text which “can help them strengthen their reading and writing abilities.” (Copper, 2019) When students can empathize with a text and really take in the morals of text they become wiser and their interpretations are more thought out. According to Copper, “Encouraging students to see new perspectives not only empowers them to dig deeper, but it also helps them build empathy, a challenging concept to ‘teach.’” (Copper, 2019) Empathy is a quality teachers want all their students to have in order to connect with a text. Students and youth are the future leaders of society. They are bound to have some sort of power in the near future, therefore, empathy and compassion for other people contributes to smart decision making. A lot of the time the text itself isn't enough to really impact a reader. Critical thinking teaches students empathy through a text by altering how it's normally viewed.
