Eric Schlosser begins chapter eight by sharing his experience of visiting one of America 's largest slaughterhouses. His tour starts from the end of the production line and as he continues all the way until the very beginning of the line details get even more vivid and graphic. While viewing the slaughterhouse, Schlosser takes note in the large amount of workers steadily doing in their work. Next, the book talks about the workforce at a slaughterhouse. Mentioning some of the gruesome jobs that people have to do in order to make a living for themselves.
In Bad Ideas about Writing, Ronald Clark Brooks writes that everyone can be a writer because he believes that everyone’s experiences and perspectives are worth writing about. He expresses his belief that a good writer is not necessarily defined by their credentials or publishings. However, he acknowledges that there is a sort of stigma around writing that may discourage novice writers and offend veteran writers. In Brooks’ essay, he attempts to take an empowering and supportive approach in explaining how anyone can be a writer. He also says that even in writing classes, where there may be more structure and rules to follow for writing, optimism and a positive outlook make all the difference.
Parrott states to improve the writing of new writers we must uplift them not lower their writing self-esteem. “Indeed, the key to improving novice writers’ experiences is improving how they think about their work”(Parrot,73). Writers are the first to critique their work and if they have negative thoughts about their work it would reflect on their work by improving their perspective students would improve their papers and refine their writing skills. The author claims training is necessary to master the skill of writing, having technique is never enough. “Persistence emphasizes that experience is more powerful than unchangeable ability, and challenges help move writers forward rather than delaying their progress”(Parrott,73).
Chapter Twelve Journal In this chapter, readers are taken down a different path of what wisdom is now and also back then. Wisdom is when someone is able to make godly choices within their life, rather than having just a high IQ by worldly standards. The U.S high school english curriculum typically has its students interpret texts with a formative approach. This means that when analyzing a text, the reader focuses on what the text reveals on the surface and synthesizes it without fully considering the deeper meanings with multiple perspectives. Critical lens theory is a new and innovative way to understand a text that high school English classes can use to push and improve their students' thinking. The difference between critical lenses and a formative approach is that critical thinking offers a formative way of thinking but also many more ways to read a text.

These initiatives consist of working on different academic genres, planning and organizing material, identifying purpose and audience and for revising intentionally. It is also includes reading different types of texts and learning how to understand a writer’s argument and respond to the ideas of others.
King has provided his opinion about education is building character. Dr. King uses his words to create an audience awareness to think for yourself isn’t the same as you may call it critical thinking. Against the common assumption that colleges should teach their students “critical reasoning,” Dr. King argues that critical thinking alone is insufficient and even dangerous. Teaching one to think critically is no small task. Most students learn by constructing knowledge based on an engaged learning process rather than by absorbing knowledge from passive sources.
