At the start of the novel, Ralph was understanding towards Jack but they start hating each other with one side representing savagery and one side representing civilisation. As two of the older boys on the island, both of themndecided that one of them had to take charge and had a vote. This proving that they would stand by each other. Also,nJack was the one who had suggestedmthat the boys should vote for a leader. After Ralph became Chief, Jack was embarrassed but Ralph quickly appointed him as leader of the hunters. This implies that Ralph made sure that Jack was respected. “Jack and Ralph smile at each other with shy liking”, “liking” implies that in some way or another, Jack and Ralph were bonded and that they werenboth on the same team. Jack and Ralph convincingnthe littluns that there is no beastie. Jack had told them that he would kill the beastie but Ralph denied that there is no beastie on the island. Again, both of them had conveyed that the littluns should not worry, both thinking of the group of boys. After that they think of how to be rescued and decided that they should make a fire.
