Have you ever felt like you didn’t in? Have you ever struggled with the fact that you’re in an unfamiliar place and you know no one? If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, than you know how a boy living in a small town feels.
Kobe moved to a small town as a junior in high school. He was new to the small town and he struggled to fit in because he didn’t really have any friends. The only thing that got him through the day was the sports that he loved. The unfortunate part about him not fitting in was that he was super athletic and once he proved himself out on the field and on the court, he knew he would fit in. The day that happens, however, seemed like forever away.
Football couldn’t come fast enough when Kobe was lifting in the summer. He went in, lifted, and got out. He did that everyday to insure he give himself the best opportunity for success during the future seasons. Kobe was 6’4” and had a muscular and long body frame. He honestly dreamed of going to a division one school and he had been receiving a handful of letters from coaches but there wasn’t anything that caught his attention or really sucked him into making a decision. He didn’t want to make a decision. He was only a junior and he wanted to see what everyone could offer. There was no point in trying to make a decision this early.
Kobe had the athletic ability and body build to become great in the sport of basketball with proper coaching. This is where Coach Watkins comes into the picture. Kobe’s school, Plainview High, had a historical tradition of always being very good at basketball. They have gone to state every year in the last 8 seasons and they have won 5 state championships.
