A universal concern among people of all ages is the search for fulfillment in life, and how to obtain such a thing. This topic is also extensively explored in literature. For example, the short fictions and poem I examined reflect leaving toxic relationships to better one’s life. Also, the theme is explored in a memoir about a man who had to overcome major adversity, and rearrange his life in order to gain success, as well as through two characters in a play, who had big aspirations but did not even attempt to accomplish them. After examining the individuals in the pieces, it is clear that people who take action to control their lives are the ones who have the most success, happiness, and fulfillment, while those who fail to do so continue
"I will always be grateful to my parents for their love and sacrifice"(Rodriguez). Narciso Rodriguez, the author, is about to move into a different house and reflects on what makes his plain old house a special home in his memoir, "Home: The Blueprints of Our Lives." I want to be able to say that I lived a life with love, happiness, and faith. Additionally, not only do I want to be able to claim the above points for myself, I want my fellow peers to be able to do the same. Life cannot be all about the good, with the good comes some bad. As Rousseau stated that the “fling gardlands of flowers over the chains which weigh them down” (pg. 3) is a comparision in the real world as throughout life we will have to overcome obstacles that will weigh us down. For me, obstacles that will be the
In “Family Values” by Richard Rodriguez, the author first begins on a bit of a personal note, setting up the scene for the reader. Readers immediately learn that Rodriguez is sitting in a car outside of his parents’ home, debating on how to tell his family that he is in fact homosexual. The author then begins to expand on the term “family values” by introducing different opinions of what family values means to different cultures. For example, in traditional American culture it is common for the children to move out and find their own way in the world. They are expected to, as Rodriguez puts it, “become [their] own man” (257).
But yet, so any of us choose to live our life with that one goal in our mind, and without knowing we end up melting the engine. We do so in that we waste precious heartbeats, in a cubical for example, doing boring repetitious work. Always trying to stand out and impress the boss all to get that promotion that will offer a bigger pay check, rather than enjoying time with the ones we love. We end up losing sight of the memories that make life special, the priceless moments, by the time we realize how much time has gone by it would have been too late.
