Destruction Underway
We have read many works of literature that have similar themes threaded throughout them. Sometimes these similarities are easy to see and sometimes it take a little more than a short glance to pick up on them. Heart of Darkness, Oedipus, and "Popular Mechanics" are three stories that address the same issue. All three of these works bring up the idea of destruction and how it does not only affect the person deteriorating, but those around them too. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a novel that deals with European imperialism and a man's journey through the Congo and into the heart of darkness. The destruction of Kurtz is the main focus of this novel. Kurtz's destruction is not only felt by him, but also by the natives that he manipulates and mistreats along the way. Kurtz allows greed to flood his mind and take over his mindset. His conquest for greed is what leads to his destruction, and ultimately his death. The reader is introduced to Oedipus the King. He is a king who is more concerned about himself and his own well being and his subjects were in turn hurt by that. His destruction begins from the moment he was born. When he was born, he was abandoned by his parents and bound by his feet because of a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. His destruction is evident, there is nothing to do to change the fate of the gods. His destruction begins to unfold when he learns about the prophecy and tries to get to the bottom of things in his life. He investigates what really happened and whether or not the prophecy had really come true or not. His destruction continues as he is blinds himself because he learns the truth about his life.
