CM3100-Week Three- Determining Goals Discussion “Leaders that clearly understand the significance of goal setting and how they play an important role in developing goals, will ultimately lead a more successful team in their work environment” (eep5109, 2013, p. 1). Before leaders can determine goals for an organization, they must first understand the importance of goal planning and practice it in their everyday life. A person who practices goal setting in their personal life can set the example for others. Shawn Doyle (2016) gives his advice, “Start setting goals in your personal life. Strategic planning and forecasting go into setting goals for an organization. A leader looks at where the organization is today and sets goals to produce growth in the future. The primary goal of any organization or someone’s personal life should be success. This process of setting goals begins with setting short-term goals that are attainable and then graduating toward setting attainable long-term goals. The S-M-A-R-T approach is highly recommended for leaders that are goal setters. As employees see the well-defined goals set by their leaders, they are informed of what is expected, when, and how much is expected from them. As the progress of meeting the goals are measured, it is easy for the employees to keep track of their progress. It is from the employees and leaders seeing their progress in accomplishing short-term goals, that they become more motivated to successfully accomplish the long-term goals. “Although, developing and tracking SMART goals can be difficult at times, it is important that leaders always align their employees’ goals with organization objectives, and make all efforts to measure their team’s success” (Northouse,
