Throughout the first two years of life, many changes, biosocial, cognitive and psychosocial, occur as a child grows from infancy into a toddler. As a parent, there are major developmental areas in which one should be aware being mindful that each child grows at their own pace and experiences new things on their own time. However, each change is important and should work to serve as a red flag when there is a delay or absence of that change.
To begin, gross motor skills are an important developmental milestone as this skill is evident that an infant’s actions are deliberate as they are producing large movements (Berger, 2004). This is evident in the way by which they begin raising their head in infancy to the having the ability to sit on their own and then eventually walking on their own (Berger, 2004). Additionally, we find that another developmental milestone is that of the senses. Senses begin functioning at birth allowing an infant to begin to explore the world around it immediately (Berger, 2004). Through this development, infants begin to respond to each sensation such as sight and hearing, which is significant in recognizing things within their life (Berger, 2004). Furthermore, the development of language is crucial in development as this is the way in which an infant and toddler begin to communicate with those around them (Berger, 2004). From simple cries and babble to the formation of single words, this development indicates that the child is understanding and communicating with the world and those around them (Berger, 2004). Moreover, we find that attachment is yet another development which signifies the beginnings of relationships which provide comfort and confidence
