Thirteen Reasons Why is a show based off the overall idea and issue that is bullying. In the show, a character, Hannah Baker decides to commit suicide due to the poor treatment she received from her peers. Following her death, it came to light that Hannah documented the thirteen reasons she killed herself. Each tape recording, corresponded with a person who she believed was at fault. Each individual person on the tapes was to listen to them all then pass them on to the next person, doing this all in numerical order. After the tapes got out, further action was taken and the whole issue became much larger than just a girl in her grave and a select few knowing they were to blame. One concept of sociology that is apparent throughout the film is deviance. Deviance is the fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards. Deviance is not only overly displayed throughout the whole show but there are also endless examples. Examples of this within the film include : parties, dates and a communications class that was taken by some of the students including Hannah herself. Parties took place frequently at different peoples houses and they were mostly an open invite therefore there were a lot of kids of all different types of social rankings who could and did attend. Dates took place often as well even though not as often parties. Dates happened between not just couples or pairs but even threes sometimes and were either formal or informal. In terms of communications class, students were able to take this and speak and or write freely about themselves whether it was how they felt, what they did the day before or what they had for lunch. This class was mainly confidential and for that reason students felt open about speaking out or about certain
