Life is filled with decisions. Minor decisions about small every day choices like deciding to buy a coffee or to go to the mall. These are all choices that will not have a crucial effect on someone’s life. Major decisions like selecting a college or choosing to move on after a traumatizing experience are not favored by many, but must be made in order to Come of Age. In the classic novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the realistic fiction book Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, and the young adult piece Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson the authors introduce hardships to the characters that require them to make crucial decisions and Come of Age.

This book is about a man made 16-year-old girl named Seraphina who is found alive, floating among the the damage after Freedom Airlines flight 121’s flew down into the Pacific Ocean. Being the only survivor of the crash, with no injuries or memories of boarding the plane or her life before the accident, Sera finds out that she has the ability to run more than twice as fast than an average human and solve complex math problems like Goldbach’s conjecture. Seraphina is dealing with the fact that many of the questions she has about the things around her will never have a satisfying answer.

English Essay Fiction stories are a piece of art that educates the mind and soul in a subtle way that allows our imagination to expand. Fairy Tales, novels, myths and legends all contribute to the shaping of the intelligence of a student’s mind outside the walls of a classroom and more in the shoes of an experienced character. The school board of education is depriving and censoring fictional books from the curriculum due to the fact that it is not nor does it have an relevance to what teachers should be teaching. In reality, learning more about personal issues people go through on a daily basis and still being able to craft the imagination of a child should be implemented in all curriculums worldwide and praised for its outstanding job of helping our kids of the future to become better and wiser human beings. In the book “13 Reasons Why” by Jay Asher, it discusses real life issues teenagers in highschool are going through while still being able to include many examples of literary terms students can evaluate and discuss.
Recently, bullying has been becoming more and more of an issue. It’s gotten so bad that one out of four kids deal with it. Currently, bullying is worldwide. There’s no place where it began, because it’s pretty much human nature. Many people are trying to stop it, whether by using zero-tolerance policies, small punishments, and more, however, nothing has worked so far.
Bullying can affect students in different ways, it can be the cause of many different mental health issues. “Bullying has detrimental effects on students’ health, well-being and learning.” (Ministry of Education, 2017) Research has found that bullying can have short term or long term impacts on victims which can take years to recover from. Teachers need to be able to help students to deal with bullying and provide them with the tools to respond to bullying and help them to recover. Students who are victims to bullying can suffer from numerous problems.

Bullying is an undesirable, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves actual disparity of power. According to Megan Brooks bullying is a serious public health problems, with significant short-and long-term psychological consequences for the child who is bullied and the child who is the bully. This only tells us that bullying can lead to difficulty that a certain children may experience and will have either short or long term problem. “Bullying has long been tolerated as a rite of passage among children and adolescents, but it has lasting, negative consequences and cannot simply be ignored.” Committee chair Frederick Rivera, MD.
Bullying is a widespread problem in our schools and communities and has a negative impact on students’ right to learn in a safe and secure environment without fear. It is a process in which one person repeatedly uses his/her superior strength or influence to mistreat, attack or force another person to do something (Van der Werf, 2014). Bullying or peer victimization is now recognized as a complex and pervasive problem (Beran, 2009). It is an ongoing problem that is not restricted by age, race, gender or class. This behavior generally takes one of four forms, physical such as assault, verbal which involves threats or insults, social which entails exclusion or rumor spreading, and cyber which includes aggressive texts or social network posts
Bullying Can Be Prevented Bullying is a form of violence to pick on victims because they are different from their bullies, have insecurity/jealousy or home problems. The hate towards their victim has something to do with the victim having an unusual gift or being intelligent the bullies has yet to become. It is important that this behavior should be prevented or it will become worse. Bullying is one of the main issues public and private schools have to face on a day-to-day basis. When the bully takes it too far, the victim snaps and retaliates by fighting him/her back physically or verbally.
Bullying is also a major feature. Children and teenagers rely on their peers massively for developing their sense of identity, for learning how to interact with others and for developing a whole host of other skills. Children and teens who are bullied at school may face emotions like shame, anger, fear, humiliation and at the far end consequences so severe as depression and suicide. People who were bullied as children need to not underestimate the impact that bullying has had on them. Ultimately, learning self confidence is about owning and honouring ones own experiences – not downplaying them, not saying ‘oh its just how children are’.
