Diamond rings and beautiful lustrous things. In society we are divided into three social classes upper middle class, middle class, and lower class. Bourgeois and proletarians if you will. Where we are classified as and placed in the hierarchy depends on economic wealth and material possessions. Materialism is prevalent in the society we live in as people we tend to put importance into material things. Advertisement has a significant role in the promotion of material possessions. Figure 3.7 in our Rhetoric in Popular Culture textbook a picture of a hand with a diamond ring. The hand is the left hand, and the ring is located on the ring finger. Therefore, it's evident that it's something to do with a wedding ring. The object in this advertisement is the ring. Jewelry in some cases represents wealth, pieces of jewelry tend to have precious stones rubies, canaries, sapphire, opal, and most of all diamonds. Pathos, the entire ad is meant to appeal to the audience's emotions. Sympathy and sadness are the emotions that advertisers trying to evoke. The purpose behind this ad? To get people to understand their privilege and that material things, such as a diamond ring isn't worth it. Many of the diamond miners are enslaved meaning that women, men, and especially children are forced look for diamonds. The economic status of these people? All tend to live in the state of poverty and work in deplorable working conditions.As a result, they don't have the means, nor material possessions. It is worth noting that child labor is prevalent in the diamond industry.
