Diction in the 19th, 20th, and 21st century has changed dramatically ranging from words being uses such as thou, art to you, and will. Diction is the choice of words and oftentimes words have deeper meaning than the traditional definition or surface meaning, and the author puts them in there for a specific reason. it is a way to show that there can be a deeper meaning to s something when it is not just the basic definition. in order to know the definition of how the author is using a specific word you have to look at context clues. In the poems we have read from all 3 centuries, we can see how that diction has changed and how the intentions have changed dramatically. Common word choice in this century included words not commonly use now but that have a deeper meaning than what we know them as now. In the poem “cargoes” we see specific word choice distinct to that time period and as well to the region. For example, the use of proper nouns show the sophisticated place, but also tell us that it takes place around the 18th to 19th century. Also describes foreign ships to make the reader understand the fear that they felt as those ships came in(cargoes stanza 3), and refers to foreign words such as “Moidores” to give the reader a specific insight of the feel of the poem. A common word choice in the 21st century was the choice of meaningful words for powerful poems and also words with such power usually to convey love or other emotions. For example, in the poem “Blandeur” we see word choice that conveys the dramatics and the emotions of the world falling apart. The author uses words like “grandeur” and “calving” to convey her feelings towards what's happening and to use those words as dramatics to convey emotions from the reader.
