Tan wants the audience to take in how Tan portrays an American’s view of Chinese food. A simile is comparing two things to each other creating a better idea of description to the reader. Throughout the essay, Amy Tan uses Imagery and simile to create a vast and detailed idea of the surroundings in her essay. Through using Imagery and simile Tan creates a deeper connection from the reader to her essay.
She uses similes when she is judging the stranger sitting in front of her and uses them to compare his appearance. She is observing his shoes and mentions: “...complex patterns like a set of intentional scars,” and “He is wearing red like the inside of the body exposed.” she includes these comparisons to illustrate a more vibrant vision of his outfit to the reader. Moving forward, she also includes her judgment of his appearance and the way he comes across to her. “This life he could take so easily and break across his knee like a stick …” she mentions this to have the reader believe that the person sitting there with her looks shady and sketchy like a thug in a dark alley.
The poem I have chosen is “Work Boots: Still Life” by Jim Daniels. After glancing over it, the short poem is about a pair of work boots beside the screen door. These boots are a symbol to represent the worker doing hard labor. As throughout the short poem gives evidence to that and also shows how the worker feels exhausted. With the Daniels's specific use of simile, metaphor, synecdoche, symbolism and personification, the poem emerges from an allegorical story about the life of a pair of boots to the reveal the present and future hard work the laborer has to do.
A simile is a comparison that describes two different things using ¨like¨ or ¨as.¨ The first way Connell demonstrates using a simile is in the example, ¨The sea was as flat as a plate glass window.¨ He describes the sea to a smooth glass window. During this part of the story, there was no breeze in the air and the ocean waves were still and calm, which caused Rainsford to feel stressed about the strange things that were happening around the island. Another way Connell used a simile was ¨... his thick eyebrows were pointed and military mustache was as black as the night from which Rainsford had come.¨
He made the reader feel like he/she was a part of the reading, the author use different method to make the readers feel connected to the article by including similes and metaphors so the readers can have an emotional attachment to the article. Bransford used these methods so that the reader can sympathy with homeless people living in tent cities. Example of a simile in the story “it is like a prison” (Bransford, 2009, pg.389). This example referred to a community with the strict rules. A simile is a form of figurative language that uses the word “like” or “as” to make a comparison. An effective simile can tell a lot about a character or scenario. Early on in Wiesel’s book, he describes Moishe as “Physically, he was awkward as a clown. His waiflike shyness made people smile” (3).
Throughout the past and now the present, we often refer to heroes as the ones that save the day, such as superman or batman, the people who stand up for what they believe in. When standing up for something or someone, there are always consequences, so within every decision, there are two choices: standing up or standing by. Our literature and societies issues often create great examples of what standing up and standing by construct opportunity wise, whether it is surviving the concentration camp Auschwitz, killing a friend for the good of Rome, or even taking a stand for equal pay as female athletes. Once a choice is made, no matter the decision, the outcomes will contain both positive and negative outcomes.
A simile is when two unlike things are compared using like or as. Strasser comments, “The heavy fog was like a trapdoor pressing down on her consciousness” (9). Strasser chose to use a simile to show how the fog was pressing down on her consciousness. The word like is the word that shows that a simile is being used in this quote. In this section of the story, Madison and Tyler have just dropped Lucy off at her house after a party.
Poetry is an important part of literature which conveys an author 's ideas across to the reader through the use of descriptive language. Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
Theodore Roethke and Rita Dove used simile and alliteration, from the quote that I used. In “My Papa’s waltz,” the author used “like” to compare how hard it was for the child (and the dad was drunk) and alliteration of /s/ (still and shirt). In “Grape Sherbet,” the author used alliteration of /t/ (trying and taste) and alliteration of /s/, “swirled snow.” I think that the poem “My Papa’s waltz” has more literary devices than “Grape Sherbet,” but I also think that “Grape sherbet” have more complex theme than “My Papa’s
In Laurie Ann Guerrero’s “Ode To My Boots” it is clear that the poet is addressing how she relates to her boots. The poet details how her boots give her a sense of courage, power, strength, and the ability to be acknowledged. Throughout the poem, the author praises the boots that she wears because it makes her feel empowered. Almost to the point as if she is having a conversation with them. Hence, this unique quality distinguishes and enables the poets’ ability to be able to compare herself to the power of boots.
Everything in life has similarities and differences as long as you're looking for them, but some have more than others. Comparing similarities and difference between two things in life is making a compare and contrast (book) . When comparing and contrasting two pieces of literature you have to observe not only the themes of them but also the plot. Fences by August Wilson and My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke have many similarities and differences throughout the literature due to themes and the plot.
Oranges and grapefruits are very similar on the outside. They have the same shape and their colors are very alike. But on the inside they are very different from each other. An orange tastes sweet while a grapefruit is sour. A similar idea can be appealed to two short stories.
Some poems may have a strict structural form while others may not. The writer can incorporate one of many poetic devices into his work to relay his message to the reader. Examples analyzed today include poetic sound, onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme, meter, and verse. An example of poetic sound, onomatopoeia, and alliteration can be found in Helen Chasin’s short poem “The Word Plum”.
In order to transfer her theme the author also uses simile, for instance, ' 'the tears running down like mud ' ' to emphasize that those tears are not positive tears, but negative tears like mud, which is unpleasant. It makes the reader understand that the protagonist 's childhood period is not easy and depressing. She also uses personification in her writing, for example, ' ' The Fury of Overshoes ' ', the title describes a fury, which is an emotion. Emotions are human qualities, and overshoes cannot express fury.
