In the article “camping for their lives” by Scott Brandsford, the author writes about tent cities and are developed and the people and the people that live in them. The author writes about a couple that just recently got married and how they couldn’t afford to buy a house. They had to live in a tent city in Fresno, California. The author also tells the reader about a couple different tent cities, not only in America but around the world. The author also make a historic reference to tent cities comparing them to Hooverville’s. Hooverville’s were homeless camp that were around during the Great Depression, and they were named to cast the blame on then President Herbert Hoover. In the article, Bransford mentions are how these camps were view as symbols of criminality and dereliction. The author also puts a statistic which states, 41 present of the homeless population has been incarcerated at some point and that part of the reason why they live in these tent cities. …show more content…

He made the reader feel like he/she was a part of the reading, the author use different method to make the readers feel connected to the article by including similes and metaphors so the readers can have an emotional attachment to the article. Bransford used these methods so that the reader can sympathy with homeless people living in tent cities. Example of a simile in the story “it is like a prison” (Bransford, 2009, pg.389).
