Courageous Chavez How far would you go to be taken serious? Would you fast? Would you protest? Would you organize? These are some things Cesar Chavez did in 60s and 70s to be. Chavez was a Mexican-American civil rights activist who advocated for better worker rights. He is known today as an effective leader in his time. Why Cesar Chavez is an effective leader is due to the success that resulted from his organization, persistency, and courage. To begin, Chavez showed success by his organization. Most of the time, when something is not organized, it doesn’t end up very well. So, it takes someone who can organize to be effective, and we see this in Cesar. For example, looking into Document A, a source provided by Dick Meister in Ann McGregor’s Remembering Cesar: The Legacy of Cesar Chavez, we can point to his organization, “Chavez grasped the essential fact that farm workers had to organize themselves. This is the next time in the formula to being successful. Once something is organized, you just have to stick with it, until it works out. This calls for persistency to keep trying, regardless of how long it may take. A leader like Chavez clearly knew this. For example, looking into Document B, a statement from Bob Maxwell, a Californian social worker in various social justice movements, we can point to his persistency, “Every person was pressured to take his place on the picket line when the union was on strike. This entailed rising at 4:00 am, driving some forty miles and walking a picket line outside an orchard or vineyard.” The fact that many people were pressured to take a place is a testament to how Chavez had to be constantly putting in work. That’s not even mentioning him and the people who woke up at 4:00 am to protest. It’s safe to say, anyone who wakes up that early is most definitely persist and dedicated to a
