Did Slavery Cause the Civil War? The Civil War started because of differences between the free and slave states. Seven slave states in the South seceded and became the Confederate States. Many feared the rebellion would cause the United States to separate into several small countries. Numerous factors led to the Civil War. The main issues were slavery and the right of the people. However, the main purpose of the Civil War was slavery. Slavery was causing the tension between the North and the South. Therefore, the most contributing factor to the Civil War was slavery because it was an economic issue to the South and a moral issue to the North. Slavery had caused an excessive separation in the United States. The North knew that slavery was corrupt and inhumane. The North had moved on to manufacturing. Even though the Constitution did not come out and say “slavery” it provided many laws for slavery. For example, the Constitution included the 3/5 clause it gave the South a strong part in the national government. However, the slavery did not provide an answer to whether slavery should happen in the United States’ new territory. In addition, the state’s rights played a part in slavery causing the Civil War. One conflict was deciding if the states or the government had the power to allow slavery in the new states. One example of this conflict is the admission of Missouri as a slave state. The admission of Missouri led to the Missouri Compromise. The Missouri Compromise stated that Maine would be admitted as free slave and Missouri would be admitted as a slave state.
