Life in the 1920s and 1950s While some similarities were noticeable between the 1920s and the 1950s, the differences were striking. The 1920s was known as the beginning of modern America. The 1950s was known for its lucrative prosperity and anxiety. Both eras’ were similar in their economics. They differed in politics and society.
The Roaring 20s brought a lot of daily excitement and change as United States saw new developments in industry. The stock market was high and all seemed well. America was changing drastically in a good way but little did they know one event would change millions of lives for the worse. While everything seemed amazing to the unknowing eye, the change in economy, government, and social life had a lot of bad moments.
In the book Diary Of A Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney, Greg is playing video games when his mother comes in to say that they have to go to church. Greg wanted to refuse, but had no option but to go. In the car, Greg accidentally sits in a spot of his little brothers chocolate stain. While getting out of the car, his brother Rodrick tells him that he has a chocolate stain. Greg asks if he could stay in the car while waiting for them but his mother refused and told him it was rather losing the game or coming inside.

During the 1950’s adults wanted to fit their status quo, but teenagers constantly rebelled against it, while now teenagers have created their own status quo to try and fit into. There were many wars and scares during the 1950’s that all had a foreseeable end, while in today’s society we have The War on Terror, a war with no foreseeable end to come. The 1950’s and today’s society have an equal anxiety about war. The War on Terror was at first neglected by our presidents.
1950’s America was a time a prosperity and conformity. The 1960s and 1970s saw a huge step backwards from the 1950s. The social and societal changes showed that there was a lot wrong with the American society and that there needed to be a change. The African American migration toward the cities in the 1950s, led to an urban crisis.
Though only a decade apart the 1920’s and the 1930’s were extremely different. The 1920’ was called the roaring twenties due to the exuberant lifestyles during the decade. The 1930’s was called the Great Depression because unemployment was high and there was a severe drought that damaged the agriculture industry. The 1920’s and the 1930’s were also similar in little ways such as entertainment.
The Roaring Twenties was a time of glitz and glamour, but those were really just embellishments of what was actually a dark, twisted time in our nations history. The production of alcohol was illegal as of January 16, 1919. Although this was seen as the next step towards a more cultured and moral society, it actually did the exact opposite. Corruption and crime arose. Although it is true that substances such as alcohol can be abused, the prohibition of alcohol prevented the advancement of our society due to the corruption in public officials, negative effects on the economy, and increased crime rates.

In the 1920s it was very upbeat. Americans were living their life, mainly the women though. They went to bars and there they drank, smoked, and danced.
