The article, Macomb county jail to get full-body scanner for inmates describes the new technology in Macomb county prison in Detroit, Michigan. According to Kent county sheriff, Lawrence Stelma, these scanners are expensive, but quite effective (Hall, 2016). The jail population in Rockingham County and Harrisonburg City has increased to the point where action needs to be taken. Operating sometimes at close to 200% of intended occupancy, studies have been conducted to project the costs of constructing a new jail facility. With this study came potential recommendations to alleviate overcrowding at the jail and to address some issues with the inmate population, particularly that of recidivism. It was noted that the inmate population is a ‘revolving door’ and that those incarcerated for a second or further time sometimes represents close to 90% of inmates. With these issues in mind, we were tasked with looking at the feasibility of a Day Reporting Center to help address these two prominent issues.
One may easily go past the Arlington County Detention Facility without noticing a multistory building that has reflective windows is actually a jail that has 200 employees that secure and hold a typical inmate population of approximately 500 inmates (slightly larger male-to-female population). Chesnie Blankenship Comparing County Jails Wabash County Jail (WCJ) was built in 1979, so the conditions of the WCJ aren’t the best; compared to the Miami County Jail (MCJ). MCJ was built in 2009. The capacity of the WCJ only holds 72 inmates but is holding right now around 84 inmates. WCJ was getting over its rated capacity so they sent 36 inmates over to the MCJ.
The Wabash County Jail was built in 1979, and is meant to hold 72 people at maximum capacity. The Miami County Jail was built in 2009, and is meant to hold 240 at maximum capacity. These two jails being significantly different in setup, their security, and their cells will be discussed in this paper. Their differences are due mainly to the time period they were built in, and the funding dedicated to the jail.
The Jails mission statement is to maintain the Fulton County Jail, provide services that are needed and directed by the court system, provide support and educational services to the community as a method of preventing and reducing crime, and enforce federal and state law. This jail also has a GED program and a mental health program. The purpose of this
Prison also needs to be safe for the people
Just imagine the city of Houston being populated with nothing but prisoners. This is how badly the prison system has gotten overcrowded since the 1980's, and it is only going to get worse. Overpopulation has affected the lives of prisoners inside and outside of prison with a plethora of reasons that cause more harm than good. The only way to solve these problems is to reform the programs inside prisons and to reform the laws in the justice system. Prison reform is needed in the current rehabilitation programs inside of prison since little effort is used to implement a correct recovery for the convicted.
Alcatraz was a military prison that the Justice Department later made into a maximum security prison. In contrast, ADX Florence created to be a maximum security prison after Marion supermax facility found several security issues due to its original design. Supposedly both prisons were to take in the most disruptive criminals. Secondly,
The creation of an organized police department immediately had significant benefits, as cities were able to maintain order effectively. However, the surge of convicts did have some drawbacks. Initially, the main purpose of jails was to temporarily hold convicts before trial or to serve as waiting rooms for impending corporal punishment
As stated here “The more money a state spends on building and running prisons, the less there is for everything else, from roads and bridges to health care and public
In 2019, it was recorded that the average annual cost to incarcerate a single inmate in an Ohio prison was about 29 thousand dollars (Meeker et al., 2020). The price tag of housing a single inmate is not cheap, meaning that overcrowding is an issue that Ohio must work towards solving. The overcrowding of jails and prisons has contributed to unmet regulations required by Ohio and has placed stress upon short-staffed facilities (Ackley et al., 2023). Ohio’s overcrowding causes poor conditions and substandard treatment, as well as continued high rates of recidivism and unfair environments for released offenders. Ohio must utilize effective programs in order to prevent these ongoing issues and place more emphasis on treatment options for those seeking it, thus helping
Miami County jail can hold about 180 some inmates, while as Wabash County can only hold around 70-80 inmates. Miami County jail had about roughly 168 inmates when we visited, so they still had space to spare if more are to come in, while as Wabash was over their limit and had about 50 some inmates serving their sentence over in Miami County. Therefore, Wabash isn’t fit to hold the amount of inmates they have which leads to more inmates in a block cell than there should be, there are about 7 block cells in Wabash, two of which are for females, and two special cells. Miami County had about 12 pod units, two for females, and the rest
as it was not intentional retribution during the storm emergency. Evacuations to other prison house lead to overcrowding conditions that were not intentional. Also, authorities did not receive proper emergency trainings or evacuation plans in the event of emergency storms. Should future issues arise, authorities need to undergo emergency training and produce an evacuation plans so prisoners will not face an overpopulated prison and other issues should such events occur
