There was a Disability Assignment Workshop this year hosted at Towson University, and the keynote speaker was the CEO of the Human Power Project, Ross Szabo. At the workshop, the main things that were discussed were illnesses, disabilities, and their links between mental health and substance abuse. The workshop also involved talking about well-known people and different mental illnesses they have suffered through and things that they have done. This is really good for the Towson community. There are a lot of stresses and other things that can affect college students, so knowing more about people who have gone through what you may be experiencing is helpful. I know that I learned a lot, for example, that having good mental health is literally not having a problem concerning how you deal with life, and having good mental health is also how you balance everything you do in life. Good mental health is also something that everybody should have, and 25% of college students have problems dealing with mental health. According to the workshop, suicide is the leading cause of death among college students. People claim that they have insomnia because they don’t sleep, but in reality, they do not have insomnia, because insomnia is having a lack of a sleeping pattern. In fact, the average college student only sleeps 4-6 hours a night, which is almost identical to what the military does to torture prisoner – they make them sleep for only 3-5 hours. Anxiety was a large issue discussed. Anxiety deals with nervousness and affects about 40 million people in the US, and people drink to break down their anxiety problems. Another problem people deal with is depression, and the problem with depression, is there is no identifiable cause to it, and can occur through change, loss, and lack of sleep, but can also be triggered by many other things. The last thing that was covered in the workshop is coping mechanisms. Coping is how you deal with stress. The top 5 coping mechanism are eating, drinking, doing exercise, talking to friends, and not sleeping. The time in someone’s life that they develop the coping mechanisms is between the ages 12-24, because that is when most people go through the most changes in life, and the most
