The primary source that can be accessed from the link above is the Procedural History of the 1940 Census of Population and Housing, written by Robert Jenkins. It is a lengthy and thorough depiction of the development and history of the U.S. Census Bureau, starting with the 1930s. IT talks about many things, but one of the most prevalent things that it covers is the information that was to be collected from the American people for each census. Since there was so much material in this book, it was much simpler just to focus on what the Census Bureau was like in one time period. Therefore, the section in the portfolio is about the Census Bureau in the 1930s.
Emergence of the Modern United States: 1897 to 1920 Identify and explain the importance of key events, people, and groups associated with problems of industrial capitalism, urbanization and political corruption. Events Pure Food and Drug Act (1906): This act was passed so that foods that were imported into the U.S, or even food commerce between states weren’t categorized as misbranded, thus for didn 't fail the test(s). Some foods had poisonous ingredients, and other ingredients that could cause people to get sick. They started to test all foods and medicines to make sure they were not addicting, and not unhealthy for humans to digest.
Also ethnicity and religion played a part of the urbanization. Between the Americans and Europeans moving into the cities places like New York and Philadelphia started to grow. This is the time when cities started to become more urban and by 1860 nearly twenty percent of Americans had grown to live in cities. This is also when many of them started to separate into different sections between the working class and the urban slums. Transportation also increased the violence in the cities.
Then in 1946, play resumed and has thrived ever
The Civil War had concluded and America was on the path to rebuilding itself as a single nation. America experienced many changes such as large amounts of urbanization and industrialization, while also taking their own chance at imperialism. America’s urbanization and industrialization was a result of the Civil War. Many individuals began transitioning from rural areas to urban areas by the beginning of the twentieth century. These urban areas began to experience new inventions such as the automobile, highways, and entertainment such as sports and film.
The Gilded Age was an amazing time for innovation and growth for America technologically speaking. There were several new advancements that took place during this period such as; steel, kerosene, oil, AC electricity along with DC electricity. Steel was a humongous part of the Gilded Age, this invention allowed many other creations to happen. Steel helped cause the greater production of railroad tracks and the rise of skyscrapers in big cities. These two factors put Urbanization and moving west into play.

10. Plague. The railroad towns were filthy and in horrible conditions many diseases spread throughout the Railroad towns. Cholera was a main one as many rats would find themselves in the unprotected water supply infecting it with Cholera and many other diseases. Smallpox was another big danger in the old west.
The interstate system, enacted by President Eisenhower on June 29, 1956 was in my opinion, what changed urban and rural America. The interstate changed how Americans traveled, conducted business, and transported goods across the country. I feel that the benefits from this system outweigh the negative effects. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States and retired Army General created the brainchild of a system of highways in the United States that was similar to the Autobahn in Germany, which Eisenhower visited while fighting in WWII. The autobahn had 2 travel lanes in each direction, and allowed fast speeds, making travel across Germany more efficient.

The United States has undergone major transitional phases in order to become the country it is today. One of its greatest periods of change occurred in the years 1865 to 1940, in which the U.S.’s growing emphasis on strong economic policy changed its interactions with foreign countries, its image to foreign countries, and what role it’s willing to play in the world. These tireless efforts to become an economic powerhouse was a major driving force in the U.S. actions during this time and ultimately allowed it to change its image on the global stage from a new. The period between 1865 and 1910 in America was a time of not only great pain and destruction but also great transition and perseverance. Various ethnic groups and different demographics suffered immense discrimination and tragedy, such as different movements put in place to put an end to different Native American peoples or the lack of gender equality during everyday life for women and men of any race/ethnicity. On top of this, as some corporations came onto a great amount of wealth and prosperity, millions of the country’s working class population, which soon included a second wave of European immigrants, lived under poverty with seemingly no social mobility. Despite these negatives, there were still some benefits to come out of this time
Kingsley Davis, who is said to have pioneered the study of historical urban demography wrote his “The Urbanization of the Human population” in 1965. In his essay, he states that the history of the world is in fact the history of urbanization and then begins with description of how tiny European settlements grew slowly through the Middle Ages and the early modern period. According to him, urbanization occurred mainly because of rural-urban migration and not the other factors that people believe. He discusses how the production levels of this time period, due to the feudal system, used to favor an agrarian culture and then how the process of urbanization intensified during the 1900s, especially in Great Britain. He then clarifies the difference between urbanization, which he describes as the process of a society becoming more urban-focused, and the growth of cities i.e. the expansion of their boundaries.
