A discourse community is a group of people who share a common interest, ambition, and hobby; they use communication to achieve certain goals or issues that they have encountered. There are many discourse communities all over the world, and many of us are in one or more discourse communities; however, they might not even know it. In life, each person will eventually be a part of a discourse community. A discourse community has many definitions; John Swales defines discourse communities as, groups that have goals or purpose, and use communication to achieve these goals. Whether it is a home cooked meal or a fast food meal. Not everyone can cook every single day. Once in a while, some people like to visit a restaurant. Instead of choosing Dairy Queen or McDonalds, some people enjoying eating Subway. This discoursing community is a food service industry discourse community, and this community that is formed together to help individuals satisfy their hunger. The Subway community is filled with interaction with customers. This community shares a broadly agreed set of public goals and based on these goals are what type of people usually join this discourse. The food service discourse community shares common goals such greeting everyone as they come into the restaurant, keeping the customers satisfied, and being very organized and timed managed. These are a few of common shared goals in the community. In order to join this discourse, these individuals must be time managed, team player, helpful, organized, and fast-paced. Communication in this discourse is one of the most vital qualities that is required to become part of the Subway community. Without excellent communication, a customer might not receive the sandwich he or she desired.
