The Roman state rose from a small city to an empire over several hundred years, until the time of the Caesars, beginning is 44 BCE with the rule of Julius Caesar. The empire reached its greatest extent in 117 CE. For 200 years, Pax Romana kept Rome in peace with large amounts of power and wealth.
