Fall of Rome CER 21 March 2024 Due 4 April 2024. For 1,229 years, there was an exceptionally large empire. The Roman Empire. At first, it was a Republic, but the Republic failed and a dictator, (emperor), took over. The Empire stretched from Great Britain all the way to North Africa and Asia. Until. it did not. The Roman Empire fell because it was too big, and because it was in a budgetary and labor crisis. One of the main reasons the Roman Empire fell was because its military was stretched too far. The map shows that enemies surrounded Rome. Although it did stretch extremely far, the map shows that it still had tribes that were not taken over by them to the east (doc 4). These westward-moving tribes were trying to escape the Huns (Mongols) who were building their own empire in Asia. …show more content…

The News Ela staff say, “Rome had tangled with Germanic tribes for centuries, but by the 300s “barbarian” groups like the Goths had advanced beyond the empire's borders.” The Germanic tribes and the Romans could not agree on border disputes for the land. Without having an agreed-upon border, the Germanic tribes simply kept going. This alone was forcing the military to work extremely hard to defend the vast territory it was alleged to defend. To add to this, Rome had to occupy all its empire, not just the part that was threatened by the Germanic Tribes, and these parts too were being attacked by barbarian tribes. Earlier, when the empire was slightly smaller, the attempt to defend the empire was successful, and the Roman military was feared and respected by other kingdoms and empires. However, as Doc. 9, Reason Eight, says, the military could not recruit enough soldiers to defend the empire. The barbarian fighters they hired to replace the Roman citizens, while fierce, were disloyal to the empire. This meant that some of the people who were allocated to defend against the enemy
