The End of The Greatest Empire Have you ever heard the saying” What comes up must come down”? Many things probably come to your mind when thinking about this phrase. But, did you know that this phrase applies to the great Roman empire as well? Rome began around 750 BCE, originally ruled by a series of 7 kings, before becoming a republic, and eventually transforming into an empire. From 50 BCE to 200 CE, the Roman empire ruled the ancient world. Even at its height, Rome had problems that would lead to its downfall. So, what were the main reasons behind Rome’s downfall? Rome fell because of its weak army, economic problems, and failing government. The first reason that Rome fell was because of its weak army. In Rome, there were 22 different emperors in only a 50-year time period from 235-285 CE (Doc A). Another way that the Roman government was failing, according to Document B, is because the emperor allowed his soldiers to stop wearing armor and he didn’t enforce the draft. Similarly, Document E says that the Roman people believed that their government was ruining the state and that they lived better under the rule of the Huns. The Roman Empire having 33 different leaders was a sign that it had a weak government because of the inconsistency. Frequent leadership changes made it difficult for each new emperor to rule effectively. On a similar note, the Roman emperor allowing his soldiers to stop using armor and not enforcing the draft showed that the government made bad decisions. Lastly, the Roman people believing that they lived better under the Huns and believing that the government was what ruined the state shows how corrupt and untrustworthy it was.
