Starting as early as the 1870s Africa has been challenged by a power struggle from European imperialists due to their aggressive expansionism, diplomatic pressure, military invasion, and eventual colonization of Africa. Colonialism is the policy or practice of acquiring political control over another country; it can be characterized as occupying a state with settlers and exploiting them economically. The European countries that took part in the colonialism of Africa were the French, British, Germans, Spanish, Italians, Portuguese, and Belgians. Despite the Africans resistance against the large European powers, the continent was separated. Each African county was placed under the imperial powers rule. The European powers quickly imposed foreign domination and colonized their African countries. During the colonization of Africa, the African states political, social, and economic structures changed. A prime example of the damage that can be done by an imperial power invading Africa is Great Britain’s annexation of Kenya. We see the impacts of colonialism in the British colonies as an examples of the consequential impacts caused by the British. The imperial power was motivated to occupy Africa because of the economic, political, and social influence. The European powers were competing between one another for new resources, trade opportunities, and territory. Once the trade slave ended, Europeans powers still had interest in Africa. Due to certain economic issues going on in Europe after the industrial revolution, the imperial power viewed Africa as an opportunity to gain back its economic losses.
