Discuss The Pros And Cons Of Intermediate Sanctions

Intermediate sanctions like anything need to be analyzed critically in order to see if they are effective. Analyzing the pros and cons of intermediate sanctions would allow us to have an educated stance when it comes to either supporting or opposing these sanctions. There are a variety of intermediate sanctions that are available. Examples of intermediate sanctions include home confinement, community service, fines, and intensive supervision probation. (Clear, Reisig, Petrosino &Cole, 2017) These variations make it super hard for someone to analyze their effectiveness. They also make it very hard to have an opinion on supporting or opposing them.
Pros of intermediate sanctions
The pros of intermediate sanctions are a lot. First and foremost, the biggest pro, in my opinion, is that they reduce the prison population and the cost. Prisons have not seen a bigger success rate than intermediate sanctions. (Clear et al., 2017) If prisons are not proven to reduce recidivism then why waste the money keeping people in prisons where they are separated from family and friends? Second, keeping those who committed petty crimes with people who committed felonies doesn’t make sense. This scenario would just teach misdemeanor offenders nifty ways on how to commit felonies. Some parts of the public including myself believes intermediate sanctions are a good thing. The other half of the public and the criminal justice system seem to be going with the “tough on crime” motto where they give intermediate sanctions no thought whatsoever. I believe every offender has the ability to be rehabilitated. Everything learned can be unlearned. Yes, it’s hard to unlearn something that’s part of someone’s life, but it’s not impossible.
