In an excerpt from the book called Inside the Mouse: Work and Play at Disney World, Susan Willis reviews for the reader the ways in which Disney World can be considered a private state and a seamless corporate product. Willis presents supporting evidence in the form of participant observation and in depth analysis, and through the use of those tools, synthesizes opinionated theses of what Disney World is truly about. The central thesis of the book excerpt titled Disney World: Public Use/Private State is the notion that Disney as a corporation values the success and expansion of their endeavors over the human. Initially, the essay provides an anecdote to connect the reader to the analytical style that Willis utilizes.

My point of debate is the noteworthy propensity of LGBT communities to be more stable and prominent in suburban and rural communes, than in the large cities in the US. As advocated by post-structuralist feminist and queer theory, the reasons for such differences are numerous and intricate, including income, race, lifestyle, household structure, etc. LGBT communities have successfully established themselves in the suburbia and will continue to assert their political advocacy in the urban realm if more communities relocate to suburbs and beyond. Consequently, these regions are slowly turning into “gayborhoods”.

In the 1980s, same-sex attraction was very often seen was a sin and a moral wrongdoing. In the passage, Harper states that “maybe lost is best”, which implies that perhaps it is time that Joe embraced his sexuality; and although the usage of the word “lost” emits a negative connotation, it is nonetheless very meaningful because being openly homosexual in the 1980s was not something that was often encouraged, and it is in the context that Joe, as a religious man, can understand because he also see it as a sin. Black queer subjects in black, presumed heterosexual or gay (mostly whites) contexts find that an identification with larger groups is more a liberatory exit for survival than those people who identify themselves with dominant ideologies.

Gay Community The gay community is a community that has gotten stronger and stronger as years go by. Not only does it get stronger but it grows as well. Once, a long time ago, we used the word gay to say how someone or something is bright or happy. Can you imagine someone today saying, “Those flowers look very gay” or “I had such a fun day today, I feel gay?” No, because we now use the term “gay” to refer to a male homosexual person. After many years gay changed its meaning throughout time, but its meaning is constantly changing. People now use gay as an insult or to point something out as different or the outcast, but back in the day it meant being carefree and bright.

Sexuality is not something one is born with or something that comes naturally. Sexuality is learned from differing social and cultural interactions, which build from one’s basic physiological instinct. Humans are born with basic sexual potentials, but society helps to form their resultant sexuality. At the biological level, humans house various erotic zones that act as the baseline of sexuality. Sexual practices are socially and culturally adopted, based off of these zones, which lead to learned sexuality.
