Diverse Classroom Reflection

My perception of how to work with a diverse classroom has changed somewhat. As a teacher candidate, the initial thought of learning how to work with diverse students seems complex. Although, the process is involved, I was delighted to see that there are some suggestions provided to help students with learning needs that I employ as a substitute teacher. For instance, when I am teaching a lesson, the students are given instructions on how to complete a task. The instructions are repeated a few times but with variance in order for all students to gain an understanding. Then I ask the class to reiterate the directions to me. Additionally, directions are written on the board as they are given in a step-by-step method (McGrath, 2007, p. 67). Students are then asked if they have any questions about the lesson. Generally, one or two students do raise their hands to pose a question for clarification. However, to make sure the directions are understood I will call on a few students, one at a time, to tell me what I need to do in order to accomplish the task.
My view has changed some about how to perform better with diverse students in the classroom as well. For instance, to work with students and parents I will post daily homework assignments on the class website. Students will be greeted in the hallway every morning prior to entering the classroom. I will make eye contact with all of the students throughout the day during school in order to acknowledge them and affirm respect. Additionally, there will be a zero tolerance for bullying.
