Today was my first Diversity class. With today’s class we were given an introduction to what we should expect the class to be about and some of the more frequent terms, statements, and ideas we should expect to come back to, continuously throughout the semester. Some of these terms and ideas mentioned include, but are not limited to: oppression, anti-oppression, single oppression, and socialization. Oppression being one of the big ones from what I remember.
What did I think of these terms? Well, social oppression and anti-oppression are terms I had heard. I think I just didn’t quite know them that well or remember, and/or heard of them in the context they were used in today. It also may have been how often these words were brought to our

I thought of what the word meant to me, what thoughts came to mind when I thought of the word, and then, how that related back to the course and what we were currently discussing. This was for the reason that when I think of the word diversity, what come to mind are different backgrounds, cultures, norms, languages, viewpoints, etc. What we were currently discussing in class were things like oppression, the occupations woman enter and how the roles in these occupations are similar to those they take on at home, and questions such as, why should a surgeon get paid more than a garage collector, etc., etc. These are where my thoughts were at this point in the …show more content…
It was a very cool activity. I have given thought to the similarities and differences I have with my peers as well as others including the majority population in Canada before. However, doing this activity it was cool to see just how much was different, visually, seeing it on paper. The way it was designed and the way we were told to complete it, it really gave you a clear picture of where you were at in comparison to others, but then you also have to keep in mind one’s perspective on where they thought they belong on the flower may have also had an impact on where they were actually
