I really hated it when my parents pulled the “when I was your age…” trick to get me to do whatever they wanted. I would roll my eyes for a bit, but in the end, I would obey them nevertheless. I never really understood the hardships they went through growing up in the rural side of Vietnam. However, after visiting Vietnam, the numerous struggles my parents endured became evident. We visited my grandmother in a small town just outside of Da Lat. When I first saw her, the first thing I recalled was her smile. She had the biggest and sweetest smile ever, but it was masked by black dye. My grandmother grew up using Ohaguro as a toothpaste substitute, as toothpaste was unavailable in rural Vietnam. While it prevented her teeth from decaying, Ohaguro resulted in permanently blackened teeth. I was disgusted anyone would do such a thing. At the clinic, I participated in Sealant Day and Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) where the majority of participates were Hispanic. These events provided free dental procedures for children with uninsured and low income parents. Most of the time, the parents knew little to no English. Luckily, their children were great translators. I realized how important it is being bilingual in the healthcare field. Diversity in the health field would not only be great for representing the underrepresented minority, but also beneficial when communicating with the patient. Another thing I encountered was the lack of advertising to all groups. Despite these dental events being opened to everyone, it seemed that HAHF focused on the Vietnamese community, while Sealant Day and GKAS focused on the Hispanic community. In the future, it is my goal to improve advertising in health events. In effect, everyone would get equal opportunity to receive free health and dental benefits
