I yearn to be a member of a team of trailblazers in the global healthcare industry filled with diversity. I aspire to shape the world of tomorrow by improving the quality of people’s lives and the health of our planet. Diversity will be crucial to my achievement of this goal. As a biomedical engineer I will work on a multifaceted collaborative team. The diversity of this group will drive innovation, foster creativity, and promote open-mindedness. Last summer my job as a camp counselor teaching science to elementary students of diverse backgrounds taught me first hand how crucial diversity is in understanding the world. At this camp, a myriad of different personalities, beliefs, and backgrounds attended. Lebanese, Indians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Caucasians of all classes were present. These factors cause them to react differently to lab situations. One such example is their reactions to the hissing cockroach they examined when studying insects. This lab consisted of implanting electrodes into a cockroach’s hollow antennae in order to send electrical signals that the cockroach will interpret as contact with an object, allowing us to control the cockroach remotely. I was elated that it was possible to create a ‘roboroach’. I successfully completed this lab; then was able to help others face their fear and finish, because I embraced the diverse reactions of the kids at summer camp. I am now able to empathize with people of different cultural backgrounds than myself. I was able to learn more about my natural style of leadership. I learned that to be an effective leader I must constantly evolve and change the way I present myself in order to connect. Through this experience, I have become a better leader, public speaker, problem solver, worker, and team
