Dear Iowa State University Development Committee, In appreciation of the variety of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds represented on Iowa State University’s campus, Students4ISU would like to propose an event that would recognize and celebrate the diversity found in the ISU community. The following document details a two-part event of a public concert and international food festival for the students enrolled at Iowa State. Included in the document are specifications for the event, recommendations for student safety, and a cost/profit projection for the event. Iowa State University takes pride in the diversity represented among the student body, who in turn embody the most wonderful elements of ISU’s culture.
Primarily, the idea behind bilingual education is that ““primary and secondary school students who do not speak English well or at all should be taught in some or all subjects in their native language while they learn English” (Skrentny 179). The law targeted limited English proficiency students and especially the Hispanic community who had the high rate of dropouts at schools. While Gann, Duignan, Moore and Pachon insist on the role of Hispanic movement in supporting bilingual education, Skrentny's analysis of bilingual education demonstrates that Hispanics claimed bilingual education as a civil right issue after the emergence of bilingual education. He does not deny the role of the Hispanics but does not put the merit of bilingual education on them. In fact, Skrentny explains that the strongest support for bilingual education came from organizations such as the National Education Organization which argued that forcing immigrant children to give up their mother tongue and native culture in order to assimilate might cause important damage on the self-esteem of the children.
The story of Misty Copeland has always interested me in many ways. I may not be an African American but the thought of her not being extremely skinny and still making her way up to principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre has encouraged me to accept my body the way it is and just dance from the heart. She has shown the world what it’s like to follow your own path no matter what road you take to get there. “Dancing Toward Diversity”, talks about Copeland in a very positive way. She’s been given so many opportunities to make dancers aware of the problems with diversity in ballet, even so far as the American Ballet Theatre creating scholarships for kids of color to help pay for them to attend their summer intensives.
District Profile The Martin County School District (MCSD) consists of 20 schools servicing more than 19,000 students. The district received an “A” rating from the state of Florida for the 2016-2017 school year, reflecting an increase from a “B” rating in 2015-2016. The district continues to strive to meet the needs of its diverse learners from both an academic and social/emotional perspective, so that students can be successful as they enter life beyond MCSD. The charts below represent the racial make-up of the student and staff populations. Additionally, nearly 40% of the student population is economically disadvantaged.
During the 1970’s, California was in an uproar of submersion of bilingual education in the public education system. This period of permissive was a landmark for bilingual education because Lau V. Nichols marked a movement that lead to assimilation to redefine unification of the Americanization in the United States during this period. Diversity Statement My current field education placement at the vineyard church of Evanston, which is a part of my master of divinity program bring people from fifty-five different nations. These people come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This is my second year at this placement which ends in the May of this year. While some people believe America embracing diversity creates unity, it can be argued that America is moving toward a new standard in which diversity and individuality are encouraged more than uniformity and conformity because people are being taught different languages and some people combine or teach others their culture. Children all over the country are being taught many different languages. Learning different languages is important because our country is more diverse than others.
It is important to understand our diverse America because every day our population starts growing from people with different backgrounds. Our schools, jobs, and parks there will be people with different culture, religions, beliefs, or color skin. It’s important to understand our diversity because that’s what unites us as a great country accepting those despite where they’re from or color skin. As we grow, we want to teach the younger generation that it’s important to accept diversity and regardless of one's background we are all the same as humans. Diversity is not a foreign word to me; I have had great opportunities to learn in a different school environment that are predominantly students from various cultures and thrive successfully. I have served as an equity and inclusion intern for LeadMN and on the Diversity Council for Inver Hills Community College (PSEO program). I am privileged to have seen various challenges but the greatest joy has been advocating for the voiceless. My leadership and involvement have given me a better perspective of serving others while enhancing academic and cultural awareness of the students.

The USA is a country which is known for its diversity and a population consisting of people from all over the globe. With a population surpassing 325 million, the diversity has become a distinguishing mark of the US.
