As an African American, I have a unique set of experiences that are valuable to organizations seeking to promote diversity and inclusivity. My experience can be used to help build bridges between different cultures and create an environment where everyone feels welcome. I am committed to using my knowledge and understanding of African American culture to help create a workplace that is equitable for all employees regardless of their background. By leveraging my experiences, I will strive to make sure that everyone is given the same opportunities for success and that everyone feels included in the workplace. It is very important to use my experience to promote diversity and inclusivity within the scientific community.
Shariah Salahaladyn currently serves as the Graduate Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs and Diversity at Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. In this role, she participates in data collection and organization of Diversity in the Graduate school of Education. She also helps design and administer surveys, update the diversity website, and most importantly research literature and perform annotated bibliographies on diversity-related topics. The diversity that may be found all around the world and in our very community has always fascinated me. I am aware that it is a widely held belief that being a minority is considered a disadvantage in various aspects and I would disagree with this. Diversity and culture is a two-way street- as a community, whether that be society as a whole or simply a freshman class, we have the potential to be able to learn from each other. I believe that my status as an underrepresented minority has shaped me into the person I am today. Despite moving to the United States at a young age and being a first-generation college student , I am grateful for the privilege to be able to further my education at the University of Utah.

I grew up in sunny California, within bustling cities, warm weather, and a fast-paced lifestyle. It was all I knew until the big move to Virginia. Once I reach the new town I was going to call home, I experience a drastic change in lifestyle and culture. The two areas couldn't be any different. They had a diverse mix of people, a distinctive blend of cultures, and a unique lifestyle.
Diversity can be defined as the variety of beliefs, interests, and experiences within groups of people. Redlands’ excellent ethnic diversity reveals statistics with less than half of white majority and more than half of minority students. As a Hispanic female, the word minority has traveled with me constantly. The fact that The University of Redlands encourages all minorities as well as the majority to pursue a future career captivates my attention. Truly, diversity has inspired me of to collaborate and compete with many different cultures and morals.
I. Description of the experience: I went into this interview with an open mind ready to learn about diversity from someone else’s viewpoint, and what I walked away with was so much more than that. When preparing for this interview I originally emailed some other participants and did not have any response. After discussing with some coworkers, I was told to reach out to Dr. Ernestine Davis. My perception of diversity prior to this experience has definitely been changed. I feel as though I am more aware and have a better understanding of where I need to be to work with diverse groups of people.

As I first started my journey on neighborhood diversity, the immigration issue was not received global attention as much as today. I was attracted to the topic of migration due to my experience as the migrant living aboard. Thus, I am curious on how we could encourage better integration process in countries around the world. With some researches I came upon the notion of diversity. Due to my profession as an urban planner/ design, it became very interesting for me to find out how urban planning and urban design can help foster the concept of neighborhood diversity.
One of the many benefits of having a diversity statement within institutions of learning today is the power that it has in bringing people of diverse cultures, ethnicities, socio-economic circumstances, and backgrounds together. Many people today appreciate and value the important role that these statements play in creating equality in education institutions. Learning institutions greatly benefit from the existence of a growing and thriving student community that is inclusive of people from different regions around the world. Therefore, the diversity statement of the Department of Education Leadership, Administration, and Foundations should have statements of value towards ensuring appreciation of different cultures.
