Deepak Chopra once said, “Human nature is divided; it contains both darkness and light. You can choose to accept the darkness and lament it, or you can choose to expand the light until the darkness no longer dominates.” Everyone has the option to be the bigger person or follow the crowd. Following the crowd can potentially mean falling into the darkness of society. In the book Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, a group of boys were stranded on an island due to an ongoing war. Ralph was selected to be the tribe leader. This went well and they had a rule system; until, Jack decided that he wanted to become the leader so he started rebelling against Ralph’s rules. According to How Adults Influence Child’s Behavior, written by Maryam Javed, she states, “By having a trusted adult to turn to, a child has a source of guidance that can lead them to better lives. The development and growth of a child is highly influenced by the adults they associate with,”(Javed). This means that children need an adult to look up to and follow their guidance. This notion is also evident in Lord of the Flies. The plane just crashed onto the island when the stranded boys were looking for the man with the megaphone. The fat boy, Piggy, asks the fair headed boy, “‘Where’s the man with the megaphone?’ The fair headed boy shook his head. ‘This is an island. At least I think it’s an island. That’s a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there aren’t any grownups anywhere.’ The fat boy looked startled,” (Golding 7). This shows that the first thing the boys looked for when they landed on the island was the man with the megaphone for any sort of guidance. The boys on the island needed a role model on the island so they don’t end up becoming savages. Adults are more responsible and hold children accountable if they do something wrong. If there was an adult on the island, chances are none of the destruction would have happened. Children are heavily influenced by the adults in their lives and need their guidance. If they don’t get that, then children will become savages. The additional reason for the destruction of civilization on the island is because the children had no adults on the
