A group of friends work together to survive almost 3 months after a plane crash before being rescued, and now it is known as, “The Miracle of the Andes” (Jones). These men were able to work together, unlike the boys in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. A group of young boys are on an uninhabited island after a plane crash, and they start working together very well. Although it does not last for long, the boys start to disagree with each other, and it leads to many problems. The boys end up destroying the island right after they get rescued. There are many different reasons for the downfall of the island in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, like fear, selfishness, and the thirst for power because of the way these things affect the boys

Likewise, the boys on the island are under lots of stress, and this leads to lots of poor decisions to be made. People should take a step back when put into stressful situations and think deeply about the results of their decisions before they make them. These decisions impact the island, but they are not the main downfall of the island. Secondly, the boy's selfish desires impact their chances of getting off the island because they ditch their responsibilities to do what they want. There are multiple instances of someone leaving their responsibilities to do another thing they enjoy more. While Jack is supposed to be watching the signal fire, he decides to go hunting for a pig instead. Although he catches a pig, a ship goes by, and the boys miss their chance of being rescued. The boys are upset by Jack’s lack of responsibility. Ralph yells at him about this and he says, “There was a ship”. Out there. You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!” (Golding 70). This explains how the boys wanted to get off the island, but the selfishness of others kept them from getting off and being safe. This aggravates the other

It creates problems almost every time, just as problems occur in the book. This explains how people get a desire for power, and it can never be fulfilled until the person has total control. People need to learn to enjoy the power they have and stop wanting more; otherwise, the power they have will never be enough to fulfill them. To wrap up, the thirst for power, fear, and selfishness are all clear reasons for the downfall of the island in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. These are the 3 clearest reasons for the downfall of the island, but the thirst for power is the ultimate reason for the downfall. Many times throughout history have people seen a hunger for power. This exact reason causes many wars, and it will cause more wars in the future. The largest example is World War II. The Nazi’s, led by Adolf Hitler, wanted to control the world, and make a superior race.
