The Dodge brothers, John Francis and Horace Elgin were Automobile Pioneers and Manufacturers, who founded the successful automobile firm Dodge Brothers Company. They were born and raised in the town of Niles in western Michigan. John Francis was born October 25, 1864 and Horace Elgin was born May 17, 1868. The Dodge brothers were the sons of machinist, Daniel Rugg Dodge (1819–1897) and Maria Duval Casto (1823–1906), who was Daniel's second wife. “They had an older sister named Della Ione. The Dodge Brothers were an amazing team and built an amazing company by working hard, being skilled in mechanics, and making a huge reputation for themselves. Both brothers were inseparable as children and as adults. They spent a lot of time hanging around and learning the skills of their father’s foundry and machine shop where he built and maintained engines for the river boat traffic. They worked together in the auto industry around the turn of the 20th century. In 1910, the first building known as the Hamtramck Plant, was constructed. During 1910-1913, this facility was mainly used to produce gears, other machined metal products, forgings, and castings. The annual parts production was very impressive. About sixty percent of the entire Ford car was made by Dodge during the decade 1903-1913. Dodge manufactured or fabricated every major part except bodies, wheels, and tires. The Hamtramck plant quickly became one of the most impressive manufacturing facilities in the Detroit area.
